How Dressmaker unlocks work: shop rank runs 0 to 50 in named tiers, each rank opens fabrics and accessories, and 13 newspaper reports are the fast way up.
Dressmaker Unlocks: The Rank Ladder, Patterns And Fabrics
Dressmaker has three unlock chains that run at different speeds and players usually assume they are one. Shop rank opens stock: every rank puts that rank's new fabrics and usually some accessories into the shop, and every rank adds 1% to what a dress sells for. Patterns and style pieces open on commission progress rather than on rank. The story itself opens on the order you finish cards in. The rank ladder runs from 0 to 50 in named tiers of five, ending at Grandmaster, and the fastest route up is not sewing but reading the newspaper.
- Shop rank is your prestige rounded down, from 0 to 50, printed under your gold as Rank 7 - Novice III
- Each rank opens new fabrics and usually accessories, and adds 1% to every sale
- Rank 1 alone adds 16 fabrics and 6 accessories, taking the shop to 172 of 348 fabrics and 121 of 330 accessories
- Dresses scale down fast: the multiplier is 6 divided by 6 plus dresses finished
- The 13 newspaper reports add 39.5 prestige between them and are never scaled down

The three chains, and which one you are waiting on
| Chain | What it opens | What moves it | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shop rank | New fabrics, usually new accessories, and the sale price multiplier | Prestige, from dresses and newspaper reports | Slow, and it stalls late |
| Patterns and pieces | New dress components, like the ruffle skirt behind Sew Long | Completing commissions and being inspired by them | Steady, tied to story progress |
| Story | New clients and new event commissions | The order you finish cards in | Fixed by the main line |
The pool is large: over 150 dress pieces, over 450 fabrics and over 350 accessories, all made by hand or on a digital drawing tablet in-house, and the developers describe roughly 35 hours of story commissions excluding off-the-rack dresses. Breadth is therefore a resource you buy with completed commissions, which is why the roster needs sequencing rather than a fixed difficulty ladder.

The rank ladder
Rank is prestige rounded down, from 0 to 50, and every five ranks share a title numbered I to V.
| Rank | Title | Rank | Title |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 4 | Unknown | 25 to 29 | Professional |
| 5 to 9 | Novice | 30 to 34 | Renowned |
| 10 to 14 | Apprentice | 35 to 39 | Revered |
| 15 to 19 | Journeyman | 40 to 44 | Illustrious |
| 20 to 24 | Respected | 45 to 49 | Master |
| 50 | Grandmaster |
Rank 1 is the visible example of a stock drop: 16 fabrics and 6 accessories arrive together, including a wall of linens at 20 a metre, a gradient silk at 30 and a technicolour velvet at 80, plus five silk leaf appliques at 3 each and one embroidered button at 2. By rank 1 the shop is selling 172 of its 348 fabrics and 121 of its 330 accessories, so even the first promotion is a big change to what you can build.

Where prestige comes from, and why rank stalls
Everything you earn from a dress is multiplied by 6 divided by 6 plus the dresses you have finished so far. Commissions and sold dresses both count as finished; gifts do not.
| Source | Base value | Scaled down? |
|---|---|---|
| Passed commission | 1 point | Yes |
| Failed commission | A quarter point | Yes |
| Selling a dress | Quality divided by 100 | Yes |
| Gift that lands | Nothing | Yes |
| Gift that misses | A quarter point | Yes |
| Newspaper report | 2 to 4.5 points | Never, once per report |
Because of the multiplier, a run of passed cards on its own flattens out fast.
| Dresses finished | 5 | 10 | 20 | 50 | 100 | 200 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prestige from them | 3.9 | 6.2 | 9.2 | 13.9 | 17.7 | 21.7 |
That is the whole reason rank feels stuck. Twenty cards is a decent run and it leaves you around Journeyman with a fabric wall you still cannot fill.
A sale counts as a finished dress, so it adds prestige while making every later commission worth slightly less. If you are grinding rank, prefer the newspaper reports; if you need gold for the next card, sell and accept the tax.
The newspaper reports, ranked by value
Each report plays once at the front desk after the commission that sets it off is handed in, whether that dress passed or failed. They are the only prestige source that is never scaled down, and they are worth more per card than most commissions.
| After this commission | Client | Prestige |
|---|---|---|
| Bold Tigress | Rose | +4.5 |
| Dark Emissary | Vivian | +4.5 |
| Never the Bride | Prudence | +3.5 |
| Another Encore | Edith | +3 |
| Carrot Promotion | Edith | +3 |
| Respectful Funeral | Marie | +3 |
| Spirited Exercise | Alice | +3 |
| Spring Fete | Marie | +3 |
| A-maze-ingly Lost | Fiona | +2.5 |
| Art Appreciator | Vivian | +2.5 |
| Beloved Ox | Fiona | +2.5 |
| Painted Dream | Prudence | +2.5 |
| Constellation Inspiration | Priya | +2 |
The thirteen reports add 39.5 prestige between them. With all of them read, roughly 27 dresses are enough to reach rank 50, which is Grandmaster and the maximum. Two of the highest-value reports sit on Vivian's route: Dark Emissary at 4.5 and Art Appreciator at 2.5.
The report runs the next time you are at the front desk after its commission is handed in, so it is easy to walk away from and never collect. Rank is prestige rounded down, so a report that pushes you over a boundary lands the new fabrics immediately.
Getting unstuck behind the fabric wall
When a card asks for a tag you cannot buy, the answer is a different card, not a different shop.
- Take a style-score commission first. Warm, gothic, professional and playful jobs are satisfiable by design alone and the sketchbook rates them live, so they cost no new fabric. Where a style tag refuses to climb even with the fabric in hand, the quality guide has the tag-specific troubleshooting.
- Bank the difference. A passed commission is 1 prestige point before scaling and a full budget in gold, which is what buys the fibre the harder card needs.
- Read the tier you are in. Rank 5 is Novice and rank 10 is Apprentice; each promotion is where the next wall of stock arrives.
- Do not chase a fibre you do not need. A player asked for some influence over the fabrics you get when you level up, which is a standing request rather than a feature. Check whether a cheaper fibre carries the tag before buying the expensive one. Transparent fabrics are on the developer's own roadmap alongside controller support and a challenge mode, per the launch post.
The money guide covers the sale-price side of this, the characters guide has the full triage table for picking the next card, and the tutorial vocabulary defines sketchbook, tag and commission card against the panels they live on.
Achievements as the unlock map
There is no in-game list of what each rank opens, so the achievement rates are the closest public map of where players actually stop.
| Achievement | Rate as of October 4, 2026 | What it marks |
|---|---|---|
| Laid To Dress | 78.6% | The Duke's funeral event |
| Style Goals | 42.8% | The sporting day event |
| Dart Deco | 31.3% | Priya's exhibition opening |
| Sew Long | 10.9% | The ruffle skirt pattern, first completion |
| Caw Evermore | 4.5% | Alice's last card |
| Good Girl Gone Vlad | 2.7% | Vivian's last card |
Sew Long is the one achievement that is literally a pattern unlock, Complete the ruffle skirt for the first time. If you have never completed one, that skirt is still sitting in your pattern list. The full list with all 32 rates is in the achievements guide.
FAQ
How do ranks work in Dressmaker?
Shop rank is your prestige rounded down, from 0 to 50, printed under your gold with a tier title. Each rank opens that rank's new fabrics and usually some accessories, and adds 1% to what a dress sells for. Rank 50 is Grandmaster.
What unlocks at each rank in Dressmaker?
New fabrics and usually new accessories, with the size of the drop varying by rank. Rank 1 adds 16 fabrics and 6 accessories. The game does not publish a per-rank contents list, so the practical read is the shop itself after each promotion.
How do you level up fast in Dressmaker?
Read the newspaper reports. They are the only prestige source that is never scaled down, and the thirteen of them add 39.5 points between them, enough to reach rank 50 alongside roughly 27 dresses. With all reports collected, 27 dresses reach Grandmaster.
Why is my rank not going up even though I keep finishing commissions?
Because everything earned from a dress is multiplied by 6 divided by 6 plus the dresses you have finished. The seventh dress is worth half the first and the sixtieth about a tenth, so commissions alone stall in the teens. Switch to collecting reports and stop selling off-the-rack if you want rank rather than gold.
Can I unlock everything without doing the story?
No. New patterns and styles require progressing the story commissions, and there is no free or creative mode in the game. Off-the-rack dresses give prestige, and prestige gives stock, but the piece itself still comes from commissions.
Does rank change what a commission pays?
No. A card pays its printed budget whatever the dress cost you, so rank affects what you can buy and what your sales fetch, not the client's invoice. Over-spending on a card is your loss alone.
