Dressmaker Prudence Mortimer is the second client in, pays the most, and caps Quality on Not Haughty. Her 9 commissions, tags and traps.
Dressmaker Prudence: The Client Who Pays Most and Caps Your Score
Dressmaker Prudence is the second client through your studio door, the highest payer in the game, and the only early client whose commission can fail you for being too good. Prudence Mortimer walks in with nine cards worth 250 to 3000 coin, and one of them, Not Haughty, treats its Quality 70 line as a ceiling rather than a floor: players report a 62 passing and a 97 rejected on the same commission. Her first card, Flamboyant Funeral, carries the hardest Elegant requirement in the game at 65, and it is one of three mutually exclusive funeral commissions no single dress can satisfy. The rest of her is legible once you know the rule: elegance, colour and flowers, black hated with one narrow exception, and money that funds a whole fabric wall.
- Who she is: self-styled Duchess of Twillford, campaigning to win Duke Hassan Summer's affections
- When she appears: client number two, straight after Rose's tutorial dress, nine cards across the run
- Money: 250 on her cheap cards to 3000 on her richest, the largest single payout in Dressmaker
- Her hardest gate: Elegant 65 on Flamboyant Funeral, the highest Elegant threshold in the game
- Her trap: Not Haughty caps Quality at 70, so over-designing fails the card
Who Prudence Mortimer is
The full name comes from community client indexes rather than the developer, because the official Steam achievement prints only the single word Prudence. The design has a documented origin: consultant and fashion historian Sabrina Becker built the cast around two contrasting clothing registers, a 1940s silhouette for Rose the librarian and Victorian dress for Prudence, before novelist Kerstin Hall expanded those sketches into storylines.
Official source: Dressmaker on Steam — developer Cozy Lives, publisher Free Lives, released September 21, 2026, with client style requests in professional, gothic, warm and playful registers. It names no characters, so identity claims trace to the design interview in The Guardian and the Wikipedia entry.
She states her ambition on arrival. She introduces herself as Prudence Mortimer, tells you to call her Duchess Prudence Mortimer, and says plainly that it is imperative that she win the affections of Duke Hassan. Her first act as a client is to ask you to shut the studio so no other woman takes the duke's attention. Community-observed; it may change with game updates: her card order and appearance slot come from fan-wiki narrative walkthroughs plus the achievement names, because no official script exists. Her measurements run 86.2 bust, 68.8 waist, 95.8 hips, and they drive both the mannequin and the flat pattern. Those figures are community-observed; it may change with game updates, and come from separate community sites rather than one.
The nine cards she gives you
Nine is the joint-longest commission run in Dressmaker, and her budget spread is the widest. The last three are endgame-spoiler cards, so a first run sees her at 300 and a finished run at 3000.
| Commission | Budget | Stage | Key demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flamboyant Funeral | 300 | Card 2, the Duke's funeral | Quality 75+, Elegant 65+, Glamour 40+, no black at all |
| Undercover Servant | 250 | Early run | Quality 60 to 80 band |
| Not Haughty | 250 | Early run | Quality 70 is a ceiling, over-designing fails |
| Floral Romance | 750 | Spring Fete | Her romance register pays here |
| Good Aunt | 500 | Mid run, story-driven | Made for a sick niece, not for her |
| Secret Gallery Visit | 750 | Priya's exhibition opening | The Priya crossover card |
| Never the Bride | 1500 | Endgame, spoiler | Black only, Flowers must sit at 0 |
| Painted Dream | 3000 | Endgame, spoiler | Her wedding dress, at least 5 flowers |
| Sudden Departure | 500 | Endgame, spoiler | Her last card |
Her Quality thresholds sit in the 60 to 80 band, ordinary on its own. What is unusual is that two of her cards invert the scoring direction instead of raising the bar, and both are documented from multiple independent walkthroughs.
The tags she demands, and the ones that get you rejected
Her permanent style tags are Elegant, Simple, Cute, Romantic, Elaborate, Glamour, Patterned, Playful and Workwear. The peaks decide her cards: Elegant 65 is the highest gate in the game, Cute 75 nearly as brutal, and the two pull against each other. The rest cluster around 50 and 60 like ordinary minimums.
| Demand | Value | Where it appears | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elegant | 65 | Flamboyant Funeral | Highest in the game |
| Cute | 75 | Her cards at peak | Nearly as hard, and it fights Elegant |
| Romantic | 60 | Floral Romance, wedding cards | Source of the flower rules |
| Glamour | 40 | Flamboyant Funeral | The easy one on card 2 |
| Simple, Elaborate, Patterned, Playful, Workwear | 50 | Scattered | Ordinary minimums |
| Avoid: Black | Zero tolerance | Flamboyant Funeral | One black button breaks it |
| Use only Black | All black, Flowers at 0 | Never the Bride | Her own rule, inverted |
| At least 5 flowers | 5 minimum | Painted Dream | Not flavour text |
The colour rules trip people because they point in opposite directions at different points in her arc. Early she bans black outright, late she bans everything that is not black, so the black-bolt dress built for the funeral is the wrong tool for her wedding.
Its Quality 70 line is a maximum, and the card prints no Max marker to warn you. Community-observed; it may change with game updates: players report a 62-quality dress passing and a 97-quality dress rejected on the same commission. Aiming below the number beats impressing her, the reverse of every other client.
How to score high on her three hardest cards
The funeral is the card everyone meets first, so it is the one worth a route. Velvet is the community answer because it lifts Elegant and Glamour together, and an elegant white lace accessory covers the gap. A pearl shank button carrying the Elegant tag closes a last point or two. The pattern side is a sweetheart bodice with a flounce sleeve over a mermaid skirt. Two independently written walkthroughs converged on that recipe, and the accessory system unlocks after her first card but before Priya arrives.

You cannot batch the funeral trio. All three of the Duke's funeral commissions demand Quality 75 at a 300 budget and differ only in the black rule: Prudence allows no black, Marie wants black at 50 percent or more, and Priya wants black and nothing else. One dress cannot satisfy all three, so plan two fabrics before you start. The same colour rule decides her endgame cards: Never the Bride takes all black with Flowers at 0, Painted Dream at least 5 flowers. The wider scoring rules live in our Dressmaker quality guide, and the full order loop is in the Dressmaker tutorial.
Two mechanics reward care. Grain alignment is scored, so a beautiful cut laid off the straight grain pays nothing, and a mismatched sewing thread drags quality down, the wrong outcome on a card with a Quality ceiling.
Why she is the client players talk about
Prudence is the only character that independent player reviews name directly and repeatedly: eight of a thousand-review sample mention her, and no other client clears one. The reviews are not neutral. One describes her unknowingly walking around in what amounts to a cheap dress she paid good money for, the money having gone into a fabric the maker liked rather than one she did; another names the anti-haughty dress as the moment that made them panic.
With no resale and no refund in the game, a bolt bought for her is a permanent subtraction from every later commission. Buy the bolt the card needs, not the bolt you like. If a score will not clear without the expensive fibre, take a cheaper client and bank the difference.
Her storyline and how it ties into the plot
Her arc is the Duke campaign, and the reason her cards escalate to 3000. It also explains her secrecy. Her younger brother inherited the family and began treating her as an unpaid maid; she asks you to keep it quiet because polite society would use it as a joke at her expense. If he turns on her, her nieces go out with her, and Good Aunt is the commission she orders for one of them while she is ill.
The endgame commissions are the payoff. Never the Bride is the dress she wants for another woman's wedding reception, and Painted Dream is her own wedding dress at 3000, with flowers she must leave room for because Priya marries in the same run. The designers refused branching story so that every character's wedding dress stays reachable, which is why two rival brides both get a 3000-coin card.
The friction between the two runs underneath that. After the funeral dress, Priya warns you to watch out for a lady in an ugly hat, and minutes later Prudence complains that some woman keeps interrupting her talk with the duke; the town gossip sheet, Spilt Tea, prints that they nearly came to blows. Her story achievement, Prudence and Prejudice, sits at 1.2 percent of players on the official achievements page as read on September 30, 2026, the lowest of the ten client achievements because it sits behind the late cards. Fan wikis still show 0.9 percent from an older snapshot.
Official source: Dressmaker achievements on Steam — the official list of 32 achievements, one story achievement per named client, the Prudence and Prejudice completion rate, and Laid To Dress at 76.1 percent for finishing all three funeral dresses.

FAQ
Who is Prudence in Dressmaker and when does she show up? She is Prudence Mortimer, a Twillford socialite campaigning to win Duke Hassan Summer's affections. She is the second client through the door, arriving on the second commission card right after Rose's tutorial dress, and she stays in rotation for nine cards.
Why does my Not Haughty commission fail even though it looks great? Because its Quality 70 line is a ceiling rather than a minimum, and the card prints no maximum marker. Players report a 62-quality dress accepted and a 97-quality dress rejected on the same commission. Community-observed; it may change with game updates. Aim deliberately low on that card.
What is the hardest Prudence commission? Flamboyant Funeral on raw numbers, because Elegant 65 is the highest Elegant requirement in the game, alongside Quality 75 and Glamour 40 with black banned completely. On money and difficulty together, Painted Dream at 3000 coin with a five-flower minimum is the real wall, and it is an endgame spoiler.
Can I use one dress for all three Duke funeral commissions? No. All three ask for Quality 75 at a 300 budget and differ only in the black rule: Prudence allows no black, Marie requires black at 50 percent or more, and Priya requires black and nothing else. They are mutually exclusive, so budget for two separate builds.
