Why a Dressmaker lace trim counter stays at 0/100: accessory lace versus fabric lace, the shop filter, drawing in strands, and the restart that fixes it.
Dressmaker Lace Trim: The 100cm Rule And The Counter That Will Not Move
A Lace Trim line that reads 0 of 100 while the lace is visibly stuck all over the dress is the most common Dressmaker card failure, and it has three causes, all in the accessory layer rather than the sewing. Lace fabric does not count toward a Lace Trim requirement, however much of the dress it covers. Items whose name contains lace can be tagged as plain Trim instead, which satisfies the garment without satisfying the card. And on some items the game simply does not register the accessory at all, which is what a full quit and relaunch clears. Alice's Studious Motivation is the reference case: Quality 75, Gothic 40, Romantic 25, Use 100cm of Lace Trim, on a 250 budget.
- Lace fabric never counts. Only accessories whose type is Lace Trim add to the line
- Filter the accessory shop to Type: Lace Trim before you buy anything
- The placement counter reads metres, the commission card reads centimetres. 0.67m on the counter is 67 on the card
- Buy a little over a metre. One metre measured 96cm on the card in a recorded run
- Overshooting is fine. Dresses at 109 and 144 against a 100 requirement both passed

Lace fabric versus lace trim
The game has two different things called lace, and every trim counter confusion starts with that.
| What it is | Shop type | Examples on record | Counts toward 100cm? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lace fabric | Fabric, type Lace | Lace on Pink Silk, Ebony Lace, Black Lace, French floral black lace, ivory lace | No. It feeds Gothic and Romantic and leaves Lace Trim at 0 |
| Lace trim | Accessory, type Lace Trim | Pink Daisy Lace, White Daisy Lace, Pink and Violet Sunshine Lace, Harvest, Pale Pink and Lavender Tiara Lace | Yes, by the centimetre |
A dress cut entirely from lace fabric can score Gothic 86 and Romantic 58 and still show Lace Trim 0 of 100. That is not a bug and no amount of sewing will move it. The distinguishing field is the accessory's Type, not its name and not its appearance, which is why the shop filter matters more than anything you learn by eye.
Items with lace in the name can be tagged as plain Trim. A plain Trim strand dresses the garment and leaves a Lace Trim requirement untouched, which is why the counter can read zero on a dress that is visibly trimmed from collar to hem.
The centimetre maths on Alice's card
Alice's Studious Motivation is the cleanest example in the game because the requirement is large enough to see the counter work. One recorded run, strand by strand, is the whole method in miniature.
| Step | Placed | Card reads | Passes? |
|---|---|---|---|
| First strand | 67cm | 67 / 100 | No |
| Second strand | 21cm | 88 / 100 | No |
| Third strand | 8cm | 96 / 100 | No |
| Two more strands | 13cm | 109 / 100 | Yes |
The lace is sold by length, and the metre that run bought came to 96cm on the card, four short of the requirement, so a second purchase was needed. Buy more than a metre. The lace also nudges Romantic upward as it goes on, taking that dress from 58 to 61, which is free help on a card that wants Romantic 25 as well as Gothic 40.
Two units are in play and they are not the same. The placement counter while you draw reads metres; the commission card reads centimetres. The conversion is direct, so 0.67m drawn is 67 added, and the line only ticks when a strand is finished rather than while you are dragging.
The counter only moves when a strand ends, so the fastest way to reach 100 is to finish short strands rather than to fight one long one. Add the lace after the sewing is done and the style tags it carries, Cute 5, Playful 5 and Romantic 3 on the daisy and sunshine laces, or Romantic 5 on the tiara laces, land on top of a dress that is already sewn.
When the counter is genuinely stuck
If the type is right and the line still will not move, the item is not registering. This is the failure players first mistake for their own mistake, because the accessory is attached and visible. Three players on the Steam thread on being stuck on Alice's Studious Motivation level describe it in almost the same words.

- Filter the shop. Set the accessory Type to Lace Trim and only what that filter shows is eligible. This is not cosmetic: the same name can exist as both a fabric and an accessory.
- Check the category, not the look. Accessory lace counts, fabric lace does not. The community fix in that thread is the edit line: "has to be accessory lace not fabric lace!"
- Fully quit and relaunch. The player who first posted a resolution wrote that they had put Black Lace over the whole dress, then found that restarting the game made it count as Lace Trim. On another quest a restart made two more fabric pieces appear in the patterns tab and the dress completed.
Players report the stale state surviving an in-game return, so close the game and open it again. Do not re-sew anything before trying this, because the dress you are working on is usually fine and the accessory registry is not. The same failure class shows up on finished dresses, where a complete off-the-rack dress refuses to close out and sell with no unmet requirement visible.
Patch notes also matter here. One of the early fixes covered lace that had not been tagged as lace trim, so a lace that did not count before a patch may count now. Treat any item-specific behaviour as version-dependent.
Placing lace without fighting it
Three placement problems account for most of the fiddling, and all three are solved on the mannequin rather than in the shop.
Floating off the fabric. Raise the trim until it starts to flatten against the dress, then tilt it up or down until it lies down. A strand drawn straight at a distance from the surface reads as decoration rather than as trim.
Facing the wrong way. Lace faces the direction you drag it. There is no flip command in the placement panel, so remove the strand and draw it again from the other end. Dragging it backwards gives you a mirrored lace with the same tags and a worse look.
Too long or badly placed. Click one of the strand's red pins to open its panel, where the piece can be resized or removed. There is no undo on removal, so check the panel before pressing it. The zoom controls that make this bearable are covered in the zoom guide, and the pinning basics in the tutorial.
Players report trims carrying bells and tassles as the least reliable accessories in the shop, which matters because Vivian's Exotic Moth card counts placed accessories of type Tassel and her guide has the full card. If a tassel will not sit where you put it, that is the known class of problem rather than your mouse.
Trim length and the 50m achievement
The official achievement Trim and Proper needs more than 50m of trim on a single dress, and it is the rarest in Dressmaker at 1.6% of players as of October 4, 2026. There is no trick to it: one long lace strand drawn in repeated passes over a plain base is the cheap route, and the same dress can be sold rather than delivered because the three craft marathons check anything you hand in, sell or gift.

Harder than it Seams, at 300 accessories on one dress, works the same way: hold Shift to place several in a row instead of one per click, and the price scales with Quality so a clean base pays for the decoration. Both are in the all 32 achievements breakdown, and the sale arithmetic is in the money guide.
FAQ
Why is my lace trim counter stuck at 0?
Two reasons cover almost every case. Either the item is lace fabric rather than lace accessory, in which case the card will never count it, or the accessory is not registering at all. Filter the accessory shop to Type: Lace Trim, and if the counter still will not move, fully quit and relaunch rather than returning to the main menu.
Does lace fabric count toward a Lace Trim requirement?
No. A dress cut entirely from lace fabric can read Gothic 86 and Romantic 58 and still sit at Lace Trim 0 of 100. Only accessories whose type is Lace Trim add to the line, and the field that decides it is the type, not the item name.
How do I hit Use 100cm of Lace Trim?
Draw the lace in strands on the mannequin and finish each strand so the card line ticks up. Overshooting is allowed: recorded runs at 109 and 144 against the 100 requirement both passed. The placement counter reads metres and the card reads centimetres, so 0.67m drawn adds 67.
How much lace should I buy for 100cm?
More than a metre. Lace is sold by length and the metre that bought in one recorded run came to 96cm on the card, four short, so a second purchase was needed to finish the requirement.
Does trimming a dress give bonus points or money?
No. Adding lace, bows, buttons or gems scores nothing and pays nothing, which players complain about constantly. Specific cards will still name an accessory outright, as Alice's does with 100cm of Lace Trim, and that is the only reason trim is worth buying.
